The slave mines at Lucania went under siege from Spartacus in 73 BC, resulting in the freedom of around 10,000 slaves.

The attack

Spartacus, Gannicus and Crixus entered the mines under the diguise of guards. Oenomaus and Castus took command of the rebels until the attack was over. After killing off some of the guards stationed near the entrance, the other rebels stormed in. Besting the guards, the rebels were left to overcome the soldiers who had been stationed their after their victory over Claudius Glaber and Varinius.


Following their victory, every slave living in the mines were freed and joined the rebellion. The rebels ranked swelled to thousands of new troops, around 10,000 slaves had been freed.
